Can you hear me calling Out your name You know that I'm falling And I don't know what to say

“The man who makes everything that leads to happiness depend upon himself, and not upon other men, has adopted the very best plan for living happily. This is the man of moderation, the man of manly character and of wisdom.”
 - Plato

Here's a little titbit for you my little titbits...

In 1997 a gentleman called Billie Harrell was living just outside Houston, Texas where he worked nights in a local supermarket as a shelf stacker.  That was until he won $31,000,000 on the state lottery.  Harrell was a deeply religious man who had struggled his whole life to pay his mortgage and put food on the table for his wife and two children, until in July of that year he received a check for $1.25 million, the first of 25 checks he would receive yearly.  He bought a ranch, some horses and put away enough money for his kids education.  He donated to his church and payed of debts and mortgages for his whole family.  Two checks later in 1999 he locked himself in the study of his house, put a shotgun to his chest and pulled the trigger,  The last thing he said to his best friend, 'winning the lottery is the worst thing that has ever happened to me.'

Christopher Reeve was born in 1952 to a wealthy family in New York. Chisel-jawed and good-looking, the young Reeve split his time between Ivy League schools in the US and traipsing around Europe. In 1978, Reeve scored the role of Superman in a big-budget Hollywood movie about the superhero. He earned millions and became one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world.
Reeve made a fortune. He spent that fortune on nice houses, nice cars, luxurious parties and a newfound passion for riding horses.
Then in 1995, Reeve fell off a horse and cracked two vertebrae in his spine. He would never walk or breath on his own again.
Reeve became an advocate for the disabled and spent the rest of his life fundraising for spinal cord research. He was the first celebrity supporter of stem cell research. Reeve later claimed that his accident helped him “appreciate life more.” It wasn't a joke. He noted that there were “able-bodied people more paralyzed than I am,” and once remarked, “I can laugh. I can love. I am a very lucky guy.”

Happiness is a perplexing topic to delve into, especially for a blog.

Don Draper of Mad Men fame stated in one of the series’ final episodes that the definition of happiness is “the moment before you need more happiness.” As cynical as it is, the brilliance of this line lies in the fact that we rarely notice happiness while we’re experiencing it, we only notice a lack of it once it’s gone.

I think as people we massively over estimate the value of things we dont have, especially those of us that are particularly materialistic, while also over estimating the pain and feeling associated with losing things that we do have.  It works in reverse as well, we think the happiness of aquiring something will be far greater feeling than remaining without it, I mean if you really really want the new iphone, is the pleasure of having it really going to be that much greater than the pain of not?

So before I ruin your day, and maybe throw a little controversy into the mix, by releasing my converted opinions upon thee, lets just clarify, everyone is hard wired this way, its how we choose to live our lives that ultimately derives how happy or unhappy we are at any given moment.

You are a terrible judge of what does and does not make you happy, and also remembering what did.  Odds are those horrid times you had in school weren't that bad and those amazing times drunk with your friends weren't that good.  There are times in your life that you remember being unhappy that are greatly exaggerated (of course there are exceptions, I know a couple of things in my life that were a really bad fit).  The secret to being truly happy, I have found, contentment, that is having what you could describe as a 'baseline' of happiness, and, more importantly being able to recognize it.  New cars, higher paid jobs, pretty shiny trinkets all fall by the wayside when you can return to your baseline.

My baseline is very simple, I have a modest income, the people that are important to me are healthy and remain a large part of my life, I have enough physical health to allow me to participate in sports, I regularly meet new people and the bbc continue to make exceptional additions to the Dr Who franchise.

I would share my wisdom with you and make you a little happier if you would read on...
Life is a big map, on your map there are vast amounts of destinations, some destinations are better than others some are downright awful.  When we are young we have people emphasize how important it is to reach a certain destination faster than everyone else.
For me its not about how fast we get there or even about the places we go through to get there, its all about having control of how I get there.

You have to be responsible for everything in your life.  You may not be responsible for things happening to you, but you can be responsible for how you react to it.  You cant change your circumstances untill you understand that you control them.  Stop saying why are these things happening to me and start saying what shall I do about it.

Drastic changes dont work, small changes add up.  So set yourself small attainable goals.  Every small victory inches your happy a little bit further.

Stop seeking external validation from other people and things.  This includes making people think you are successful or popular or better off and culminates in the coveting of things that other people have that you perceive to be 'perfect'.  I know several people who I dont think will ever be happy because they put so much emphasis on things that other people have and do, that they want.

There are a lot of things that you can do to get yourself some internal validation.  Im of the opinion there is no such thing as a self less act.  But there are enough things in the world to provide in infinite amount of validation without relying on the constant ego boost of stuff.  I learnt the difference between need and want, I dont spend my time or money on anything or anyone that isn't important to me, anymore.

I dont claim to be perfect, but I have found some happyness, I dont mind sharing it and my rules for finding it, they're only sixfold.

1)  Take only what you need.

2)  Do what you love... as much as you can

3)  Instead of surrounding yourself with material shit, surround yourself with good people.

4)  There is no conversation that you cannot drop the comment "Roads?? Where we're going we dont need roads"

5)  Do not be relentless in the pursuit of success in any walk of life, but, be relentless in assisting others to achieve.

6)  Life is simple... stop over analyzing it

There you go, a little glimpse of what makes us tick.  Remember small changes make big differences, I hope you all find your happy baseline.  Its a shame that some people wont be able to.

Here's some niceness that might help though!!!

Big plans afoot over the next month or so, I'll update you all when theyre undoubtedly laid to waste

There's a star man, waiting in the sky...

Happy new year slags...

Time for resolutions, a week of salads and yet more impending realization that we're all getting older and accomplishing nothing with our lives...
But hey ho, no need to be glum freddos are still affordable, pizza has never been more accessible and forty year old virgins have made easier than ever before to download music, movies and television for zero pounds, every cloud and that.

How was your Christmas  Mine was good.  My parents, bless them bought me a 3d tv, I didn't have the heart to tell them I have no use for such a device as I cant afford the subscription or the dongle or the external hard drive to make it work.  its currently on ebay.  I did get some well comfortable pjs and a bottle of hot sauce, spectacular return to form from my family in the shit gifts stake.
Anyways... onto this months blogroastingblogposting,
as I was casually returning to my television today, after my usual early viewing of this morning, I happened across something that caught my attention.  Im not a regular viewer of this program but the topic of discussion made my ears prick up with attention...
'its embarrassing, he just an ageing hipster' and 'hes not cool, he's just dining out on past glory.' what on earth could ITVs Loose Women be chirping about??? Oh David Bowie?? I reeled in disbelief.  As a Bowie fan, Im obviously going to disagree with such moronic liable, but it got me to thinking.  With Bowie currently at number 1 and set to headline Glastonbury this year, what possible reason could this excuse for television have for Bowie bashing???  Perhaps the world as I know is upside down, everything I hold as cool is actually uncool, perhaps I've hit that age where all the stuff I like has turned into all the stuff I used to snort a hearty derision at.

No!! I refuse with all the stubbornness that I have come to be known for!!!

These people are NOT cool!!

The Loose Women:
A panel consisting of failed actresses, singers, presenters and slaggy media whores spouting daily mail politics with all the wit and charm of a pencil sharpener that is past its prime. A viewership consisting of menopausal heaps and students eating soup doesn't make your opinions worth listening too.   Also being famous for marrying Chris Evans makes less than less than a celebrity.

Media Celebs;  Sorry Alex Reid but you personify my annoyance with this genre of person.  Anyone famous for marrying someone else is not cool

Kate Moss; 'nothing tastes as good as thin feels', way to be a role model dick.  Not eating and wearing stuff does not make you cool.

Anyone in Towie;  Why are you on my television ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!  Spend ten minutes less a week preening your fucking eyebrows and read a fucking book.  This goes ten times for Joey Essex.

RiRi and Chris Brown; It goes without saying, she is hotter than the actual sun.  But what better way to highlight the frailty of the female as a gender than to be one of the most in demand female music acts in the world than to fall back into the arms of man convicted of beating the shit out of you.  A million times no.

These people however ARE cool:

David Bowie:  Ziggy Stardust, The pale White Duke, Jareth the Goblin King.  Currently top of the UK singles chart, released a song just to celebrate his 66th birthday, without any hype or party time, doesn't parade about with supermodels 40 years his junior.  The star man has been cool since the 60s and no amount of middle ages attention whores can convince me otherwise.

Professor Brian Cox OBE;  44 years old, currently Professor of Physical Sciences at Manchester University.  Co presenter of stargazing live, on every night this week on BBC2.  Obtained all his qualifications aged 31, after spending 17 years touring the world playing keyboards for former chart worriers D-ream.  He may not dress too hot but the man oozes cool, his enthusiasm and joy for his work makes him cool, and, you cant go wrong with a black t shirt right?

Noel Fielding;  The Mighty Boosh, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Luxury Comedy.  Widely described as a cross between a male Joan Jett drag act and a futuristic prostitute Fielding has always said of his fashion 'i dont care what other people like, if i think its funky i'll put it on and wear it as a jumper' when his most recent serie sLuxury Comedy was panned by critics he retorted ' couldn't give a fuck mate, i laughed, and at the end of the day im the one getting paid'

Jameela Jamil;  Jam-Jam,not just T4 hangover fodder.  You wont see her pissed up falling out of Mahiki.  A TV presenter with brains as well as a bookish clumsiness that only years of practice can perfect.   This week she becomes the first ever female solo host the radio one chart show, and while some may describe what she wears as eclectic she has her very own line for very.co.uk along with messors Cotton and Willobooby.

David Beckham; he's won every cup you can think of, represented and captained his country with the kind of quiet calm that modern footballers hold little value for. Championed his country at all times, model father, style icon and general all around lovely lump... so much so we've all but forgotten that Rebecca Loos thing.  I heart you Becks.

Anyone that care to disagree?

Well you must be a boy with bones like that

bon nuit mounge tout.
No apologies for not blogging for some time, I cant even pretend Ive been busy... unless you count watching csi episodes back to back and reading Brians Coxs new book over and over to figure it out as busy.
For many months now Ive been contemplating this post trying figure out the best way to word it to avoid the backlash of posts past (esp the national rant), but then I thought hey controversy is my middle name (obvs it isnt, its actually Bartone).
So the concept, 'Chivalry is dead'.....'and women killed it'
Chivalry is dead is a whinge I hear from friends all the time, I have enough female friends to know when to switch on the white noise.  To start with an example, one of my very good friends recently told me of her nightmare date, for the purposes of this she will remain nameless (Di, hah).  Anyways as far as the 'nightmare' of this date goes it consisted of a really nice meal, a few drinks and a lift home...not so nightmarish youd say, well as far as I can gather that part came from the fact that on entering the restaurant and the bar prince less than charming failed to hold open the door and after dinner the bill was split half and half.  Now when quizzed on the rest of the date it appears our gentleman hero was very pleasant, funny, smart and to quote 'fit as a butchers dog.'  Chances of a second date...zero.
Its a neither here nor there article cos this doesnt prove that chivalry is dead, its a mere pebble in the water of the death of chivalry.
Its not just the dating enviroment tho is it?  I like to think Ive been brought up good and proper, but theres only so many times you can hold open a door for a stranger in a public place and be cast a look that says 'what the fuck are you doin' before you begin to think why do I bother.
Its not that holding open doors makes me a gentleman scholar but for those of us that still do think manners count its a confusing time.
We are a generation of men raised by our mothers to be nice and be respectful to females, but we also grew up during the 90's and 00's where females  different to the ones that our parents, who taught us to respect them, knew and grew up with.  Girls became far more independant and forgive the term 'laddish'.  They acheived equality in almost every aspect of life and surpassed boys in terms of academia.  This is obviously not a bad thing, its fantastic, but it is this that has confused us (mankind).  Women want equality, in every aspect of life, and for modern men thats fine, but wait, we still have to carry your shopping and open the car door at topshop?  Thats fine, but wait, we can still do all of that, but we also have to frowned upon for owning a pair of ghd's, moisturising regularly and spending our earnings on nivea for men products.  The coin has two sides.
Lets go back to our example, my friend Dianne and her date.  Di graduated last year from dental school, she's currently a practising dentist, 2-3 years away from a partnership or her own practice, 5 years from a 6 figure salary.  Her date was a 22 year old man, still lived at home and had just gone back to college to do a modern apprenticeship.  Its this kind of flip reverse thats confusing.  On paper here the lady is the hunter gatherer, shes the earner, shes the intellectual so why is it so out of question for her to pay half the bill?  In fact she is the one that asked the guy out!
I dont know if there is an argument here to win or lose.  Does it bother you that guys are letting go of traditional values, boys does it bother you that women are surpassing us?
For me it really doesnt matter, my family upbringing will mean that I'll always hold a door open, in fact my nanna even taught me that if you are walking down the street with a lady you always stand nearer to the road, because if a car splashes it will land on you not her, and if there were an accident you can better protect them, that is old school.
Opinions... okay here it is,
I think boys should pick up the bill, in fact, the first few.  If a relationship develops though I think a lady should be prepared to treat her fella once in a while.
Always hold the door open for everyone, it manners.
Offer to help with bags, but deffo dont insist.
Girls, boys are changing too, time to start being tolerant of the metrosexual male.  We are allowed to stress over our appearence as well.
Also embrace your independence with both arms, theres nothing more appealing to us than a woman that knows exactly what she wants in life and is driven in her course to get it, however you gotta give us a chance, let us open doors and walk on the outside of the pavement, we're not trying to steal you independence, its inbuilt in us to look after you.
Those of you with children, teach them the manners and the skills they need, chivalry can still be resurrected, but the days of men being men and women being women are long gone.
Although I still havent met one that can change a tire.

Heres some lovelys
