Roll away your stone, I'll roll away mine

Hi worker bees!
Sorry about the delay in this post, I keep sitting down to blog but then getting all caught up watching the lympics and dreaming that I lived back in caveman times with Jessica Ennis who would go out and run fast and throw spears and catch our dinner while i stayed around the cave cooking and occasionally nipping out to gather berries and leaves to accompany our sabre tooth tiger stew.
With this in mind, and, after a weekend of most Olympic behavior my post is for all you ne'er do wells that are STILL moaning about the games.  Supposedly intelligent people that are obviously so dim witted as they cannot see the benefit of having a '£12bn sportsday' on our doorsteps.  This post is for you... oh and by the way you have no actual argument against it and you make yourself sound stupid when you try :)

Taffs Top Ten Reasons the Olympics in London is Brilliant!!!

10.  This Man can Suck It---------

You know in Ghostbusters II when all the good feelings around New York breaks the 'mood slime'
That is the equivalent as to what is happening to Nick Griffin right at this moment.  As mixed race athletes, immigrants and any Brit remotely different to his ideal romp home with medals of all shapes and sizes he melts a little with every cheer (thats whats happening to his face).  As we all become closer as a nation and show that we support EVERY brit no matter where or who they are people like this fall from the limelight and become what they should be... a distant bad memory.

9.  This man can Thrive----

If you're a hater then you probably haven't noticed that the beebs coverage of this games has been beyond brilliant.
Through digital television and internet and smartphones and all the gadgetry that we have you can no longer fail to catch an event that you're interested in or catch up on the days actions.  Now why is this good for us I hear you ask... Well this is a brand new system that bbc are trying, and, it works.  Which means as they are now capable of broadcasting 24 live events at any one time.  Which for the future means that we can expect to no longer be 'bored' by whats on tv.  For instance I lament the fact that F1 is allowed on television, let alone consuming a whole weekend of broadcasting, but, their new system can theoretically broadcast other sports and normal television at the same time, so, hopefully we wont need to be exposed to the sports we don't enjoy anymore.

8.  This Lady is Everywhere---------

Jess, Jennis, J-O.  Call her what you will, the most popular member of team GB and the nations sporting poster girl will only gain popularity at these games.  And that means one thing... more exposure!  Which means we get to see more of the most perfect all round athlete in the world. (I love you Jess)

7.  New Sports ---------

For all those people whinging about sport, oh I hate sports, why does it have to always be on, why do my normal programs have to make way for this rubbish.
Are you telling me that for all the events that are happening there is not one single one you have enjoyed?  You're lying.  Even my mother who has scarcely the knowledge to identify a tennis ball from a football has sat down and said how much she is enjoying the 'horse dancing' and the mens gymnastics (worrying).  These people haven't given sport a chance.  The Olympic games are going to introduce us all to sports we know nothing about, more importantly they can help the people who havent found their niche sport yet, but want to sport.  English handball association website has crashed several time due to 'heavy traffic' and just you wait and see how many people are going to be falling off racing bikes at the end of the games.

6.  British is best -----

Olympic Park, City of Coventry Stadium (Ricoh Arena), Earls Court, Eton Dorney, Greenwich,  Hadleigh Farm, Hampden Park, Hampton Court Palace, MPC, Leigh Valley, Lords, Old Trafford, St James' Park, The Mall, Royal Artillery Barracks, Riverbank, Weymouth and the Millennium Stadium.
This isnt the London games, this Olympic games belongs to Great Britain.  Its a chance to show off everywhere not just London.

5.  Triumphant Boris -----------

He is a leader!  The more this man is exposed to the rest of the world the better.  I dont doubt his expensive education and im sure he is highly intelligent.  But the best thing about Boris is he shows the world you dont have to be a serious Sidney all the time.  Do as Boris does.

4. Profiles for Pounds -----

Know who that is????  Neither does the rest of the world.  Its Zoe Smith, she only eighteen and she just competed in Olympic weightlifting for her country.  Shes not alone, other unknown athletes that will be pulling on the old Stella McCartney for these games like Rebecca Tunney or Alison Young or even Adam Gemili who just held his own in an Olympic 100m semi final at the age of 18.  They are all just children essentially.  But the fact the games are in the UK gives them the opportunity to raise their profiles sky high, all they have to do is give it their all and the nation will love them.  Then they can invite more sponsorship and command themselves a career out of a sport they love.

3.  Regeneration of London -----------

I had the pleasure of spending a few months in the East End of London after i graduated in 2005.  It is safe to say it does not look now like it did back then.
Jobs, tourism, access to sport and activities and the worlds biggest McDonalds, nuff said.

2.  Inspire a Generation -----

Not just the motto of this Olympiad but truer words never spoken.
For the haters just think ahead, with British athletes thriving in their home games it will only have a positive effect on the next generation.
Maybe you have children, maybe you dont, but think on... Sucess in this games means more funding for sports, more youth sports clubs and teams, better quality coaching and less chance your/future offspring growing up lazy.  Also for the first time in a long time the young generation of Great Britain can have some seriously powerful role models like Jess Ennis, Zoe Smith, Brad Wiggins and Even Oscar Pestorias (i know hes not TeamGB),  wouldnt you rather your kids have posters of these people on their walls rather than Amy Childs, Justin Bieber or John Terry??

1.  Hollybobs??? ---------

In 1954 the Jamaican authorities were so impressed by the heart shown by their 4x100m relay team they declared a national holiday, that is still in force to this day!!
After last nights epic performances in Olympic Park don't be surprised if the UK reaps the benefit of an extra bank holiday in August, think of that... an extra summer Bank Holiday!
For everyone I have heard speak out against the games, I have noted who you are and fully expect you to not take this extra holiday should it arise, after all it would be morally wrong for you to be rewarded for your cynicism.

That's the bottom line then peeps.... one week left of Olympic goodness I hope you all find your fave and most of all cheer for your country men (and ladies).  This really is a once in a lifetime event, so embrace it don't disgrace it.

This is the beeb commentary team watching magic Mo last night in the 10000m final, showing some truly British traits...

I told you I was trouble, you know that Im no good

Hello possums,
Now I do realize that very often I write to you all about the wonderful sport of soccer-tainment and the issues and trials and tribulations surrounding the beautiful game.  I also realize that this may alienate some of you who do enjoy the sport watching or playing... for this i say tough poops, I break it up with enough inane nonsense to please you all, deal with it.
I enjoyed writing my previous list the http://betterthancola.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/but-there-were-planes-to-catch-and.html post so much I begin this week with the first installment of "Taffs Ten Top Tens" a series of ten top ten of varying subjects... this weeks subject I chose as currently the news is flood with news of andy carrolls imminent departure from Anfield, a fair short time after a much debated £35,000,000 transfer.  Despite a recent return to something resembling form Andy has only managed 6 goals in 42 games for the once mighty LOLverpool, but, luckily for the gypsy haired giant this is just enough to keep him out of:

Taffs All time Worst ever transfers of all time ever ever.

1. Goalkeeper; Massimo Taibi (Manchester United)

One of only two goalkeepers ever to score from open play in Serie A. The 'Venetian Blind' cost Sir Alex £4.5 million in 1999.  With Peter Schmeichels treble winning boots to fill it was never going to be easy for Mas.  In his debut against Liverpool he flapped very continentally at a Sami Hypia free kick, but went on to get a man of the match in a 3-2 win.  But unfortunately the other 3 games he played for manchester united didnt end so well, and, he managed to concede a further 8 goals, including that one where Le Tiss put it through his legs from 40 yards. 1.20 million per game, not so good value for fergie.  He actually went on to have a mediocre career back in Italy.

2. Right Back: Khalid Bouharouz (Chelsea)

'The Cannibal' was named so because of his ability to 'eat up' his oppenents.  He cost the chosen one a cool £8.5 million in 2006.  He was given such a price tag because he could play 'anywhere' especially across the back four, Jose gave him the number 9 shirt.  He started off okay and i remember him popping a prime time Ronhaldinho in his pocket for 90 mins in a champions league game.  But as the year wore on people realised he couldnt pass, he had an appauling first touch and all he could really manage was to occasionally make contact with the football as he fell to the floor.  His career can be opitomised in one moment, the moment pint sized fox in the box Robbie Keane did a stepover so slowly Khalid instantly fell to his bottom and allowed him to score.  He was bit part at Stuttgart until this year, he's available currently on a free.

3: left back; Paul Konchesky (Liverpool)

A Product of the same youth system that spat out such footballing dignitaries as John Terry and Jermaine Defoe, £4million was a bargain for a defender who had already amassed 200 premier league starts and Europa league runners up medal.  31st august 2010 he signed a four deal with Liverpool, 4 months later he joined Nottingham Forest and 4 months after that Leicester City snapped him up for a 'nominal' fee.  The lesson this football story imparts: footballers who state their idol is Julian Dicks probably going to be an arsehole

4: centre back; per kroldrup (Everton)

Not to be outdone by their red neighbors Everton splashed out a cool £5 million on the Dane on the back of a European Championships in which he played exactly 0 minutes of football.  A rare miss for the Moyes-sahhia, he made his debut in a 4-0 loss at the hands of Aston Villa, he stated he was struggling with the physical aspect of the British game, he left.  He can still be seen enjoying not being tackled in Italy.

5: Centre Back (L); Djimi Traore (Charlton)

When Alan Pardew was asked would you like a defender thats comfortable in the middle or on the left, has over 100 premier league starts, a champions league winners medal and is one of the most capped players of all time for his nation he had already written and signed the check before anyone told him it was Djimi Traore.  Unfortunately that check was for two million pounds and constituted the majority of Charltons transfer budget for the season.  He was sent off on his debut, and then again in his first match back after a 4 game ban.  He played 11 times in total, before being shipped off to Portsmouth to help them get relegated.  Dont blame it on the sunshine, dont blame it on the moonlight, dont blame it on the goodtime, blame it on traore.

6: Right Midfield; Bebe (Manchester United)

The story of Bebe (Tiago Corriera) is one that could oh so easily be part of a Hollywood blockbuster.  Abandoned as a child in Cape Verde, he was adopted by his grandmother and the lived in Lisbon, but was taken into care by his church.  After playing in several street football festivals and the homeless world cup he signed professional terms in Portugal, the club he signed for had financial problems and never actually paid him a wage, but he was free to sign for another, Guimareis.  They slapped an £8 million price tag on him, which for some reason attracted Carlos Quiroz, who at the time was Fergies number two (in every sense of the word).  Sir Alex met Bebe on the day he arrived to sign papers.  If it was a movie of course Bebe would come on a sub and score the winner in the champions league final, of course life is not a movie and Bebe isnt actually any good at football.  Still at United, been on loan to Besikitas, last seen being used as a sub in the bright lights fa cup tie against crawley town, in which he failed to impress.

7: Left Midfield;  Albert Luque (Newcastle United)

Possibly the only player to have ever scored for Newcastle against Sunderland and still be remembered as terrible.  I recall him being more one sided than the argument for a registry for sex offenders.  He cost Greame Souness a princely £9.5 million english pounds.  His transfer was investigated by the Stevens report in 2007 and found there were serious anomalies.  Basically Souness has signed a bag of shite on the promise of a brown envelope, he still managed 21 games for the magpies before joining Ajax for zero pounds and zero pence.

8: Central Midfield (L); Juan Sebastion Veron (Manchester United)

Probably Sir Alexs biggest faux pa, as well his top ten hat trick.  Sebba cost the red devils a kings ransom or £28,100,000, which was at the time the most expensive transfer in English football history.  He wasn't too bad in the Champions League, but he was yet another victim of 'the English game,' essentially he didn't like the fact the opposing players had the cheek to close him down and tackle him before he was allowed to pass the ball.  Despite this Fergie defended the Argentine by saying 'he is a fucking great player, you're all fucking idiots.' at a press conference.

9: Central Midfield (R) Juan Sebastion Veron (Chelsea)

Roman Abramovich has a thick wallet, and, as if to demonstrate it he forked out £15,000,000 for sebba after Fergie reluctantly admitted he had no future at Manchester United.  He managed 15 appearances and even got himself a goal before the special one sent him back to italy where he enjoyed much more success as he was afforded the time and space he needed on the pitch.  Last seen enjoying the adulation of Diego Maradonna while being handed the international captains armband for Argentina

10: Striker;  Sergei Rebrov (Tottenham Hotspur)

Through the decade of the 90s the teaming of Rebrov and Shevchenko catapulted an otherwise mediocre Dinamo Kiev side to international super stardom.  Shev banked himself a transfer to the Italian top division, and soon afterward the premier league came knocking for the Ukrainian League all time top goalscorer.  It was George Graham who outbid Man Utd and Arsenal with modest eleven million pounds.  Sergei offered an even more modest return, bagging 9 goals in his first season and career ending 1 goal in 31 matches during his second season.  More than a million pounds per goal is too much even in today football economy.

11: Striker;  Steve Marlet (Fulham)

Fulham got promoted to the Premier League in 2001,  the chairman, Mohammed Al-Fayed celebrated by splashing out £11.5 million plus fees on the french target man Marlet.  He managed 11 goals in two season before he was sent to Lyon, where Fulham continued to pay his wages.  Just as a gauge as to how bad Market was, Al-Fayed sacked the manager that signed him (Jean Tigana) in the same season he signed him, he later took Tigana to court for 'over-paying' for Marlet.

Subs:
Bosko Balaban (£5.8), Jean Alain Boumsong (£8), Ali Dia (free), Tomas Brolin (£3) , Marcelino (£5.8), Eric Djemba-Djemba (£6.5)

At a combined cost of over £130,000,000 you would struggle to get these players onto a dream team together.
If you have any suggestions for transfers feel free to drop me the info and if its good enough I'll consider a swap.

You've got to hold and give, but do it at the right time

With the Euros firmly underway...(we're two games in and any chance I had of winning some wedge is apparating by the day), I wanted to to do one more bit of football writing, as I know I have a mixed audience and many of you are currently lamenting the now nightly coverage provided excellently by Mr Lineker and co on the beeb and Adrian (satan left teste) Childs on three.
As a welshist Im afraid I know not what it feels like to support my nation at an international tournament, but maybe this gives me the impartiality to embolden my current opinion onto your much meligned brain boxes.  Ive a lot of english friends, the vast majority of which are football fans, this is generally how I know people (note to self, expand life with new hobbies), so far I have yet to speak to one that holds any kind of faith in the national teams chances at Euro2012, in fact, many dont even think that qualification from the group stage is possible.
Now on paper, this maybe the weakest england side ever (1992 euros contends), but as the old adage goes, the game isnt played on paper.
There is little expectancy, a refreshing change from the norm from england fans, with expectations low maybe England can embrace that underdog spirit that so historically follows them.  An underdog spirit that has in the past seen both Denmark and Greece lift the trophy, both lacking depth of squad and both boasting maybe one or two definitive world class players, England certainly boast better than both of these sides did in their winning years.
The Euros are not the World Cup, the world cup will always be master to the favorites, but in the Euros teams dont have the time to settle into their football, they have to get out and get points on the board from the first whistle in the world cup goals are king and a tasty forward moving side can put the world to rights (Holland 2010, Brazil 1994), but during their time going forward the strategy is get more goals, concding one or two a game wont matter. But, in the Euros, the key is being an efficient, ball keeping, defensively astute TEAM (spain 2008, germany 2006).  In 2008 Spain boasted some high quality players, but also, a spattering of unknowns such as Marchena and Marco Senna, who both played their way into the team of the tournament thanks to sheer grit and work ethic.
If you look at the England squad starting at the back they are not shy of pedigree, Joe Hart is as good in sticks as any other gloved dribby at the tournament, perhaps the world, it pains me to say it but as much of an odious little dick shovel that he is ashley cole is the best in the world at his job (maybe philip lahm).  John (Adolf) Terry, well ive made my feelings about this scumbag clear in the past but even I cant deny his pedigree at this level is without argument.  Moving into the middle I would say losing Lampard is a blessing, its been Lampard and Gerrard without question for so long and its never worked, but no man could ever drop either without the fury of the fucking sun newspaper and its baldheaded bad breathed readers, but lets face it, theyre the same player and Gerrard has always been the better of the two.  Now Scott Parker in with him is a great plan, Parks is a 1920's englishman who is so delighted at being selected for his country he will run and tackle until his little legs just straight and drop off, exactly what is needed in that space.  All around these stalwarts are the new generation, Rooneys quality will shine when he returns (I think he'll be needed in that last qualification game, as I can see england needing a win to go through), but then you have the likes of Young, Oxlaide-Chamberling, Carroll and Wellbeck who are unproven, yes, but theyre all playing at the highest level and will not show any fear in this competition if Woy has anything to do with it.  I expect to see them playing football exactly as they should as exuberrant young talents, unafraid to take on the mights of players like Puyol and Mexes, knowing firmly the english old guard will be backing them up with strong tackling and accurate passing.
The pundits are saying the side HAS to take something from France on Monday, granted this is a big ask and it brings with it one massive problem win or draw with le bleus and I can guarantee that all of a sudden every flag toting, geoff hurst bumming idiot will be tattooing the trophy on his back with winners underneath it.  Looking at the group its far more realistic to expect england to creep through with a loss, a draw and a result against the Ukraine or even a weak Sweden side.  If they come up against Spain, as predicted, sure its a hell of an ask but the english side can out muscle and outpace the current Spain side so if they can weather the storm of 70% possesion and what should be an experienced midfield then theres no reason they couldnt take something.
If the current group make it to the knockouts they're performing above expectation.  Roy is the right man to coach the team there.  He will make sure the team are well drilled, the set pieces will be bang on and he will have got the team all pulling in the right directions.  Scott Parker anchoring the midfield stops the recent problems England have had in teams getting between the bog standard three lines of play (def, mid, fw) and with ashley young playing just off the forward one then England have the option to close down all over the park.
So look at the England side like this, yes its an ageing side, yes there are players missing in key positions and yes some fans have doubts about the manager.  But as the Europeon Championships often does, it will mimick the football being played on the continent this past season.  So to the England doubters, the fans who are unbelievably not getting behind their nation I say one word...

...CHELSEA

Since this a special Euro 2012 edition of better than cola ive included some of my favorite memories of the Euros, unfortunately none of them include the welsh side who i would so feverishly support if they could just muster up a qualification in my life time... pleeeeeeeeease.

Better Red than Dead

Well I'm back,
blogging has had to take a backseat recently due to work/drinking commitments, special mentions and thanks to everyone involved in the reformation of the mighty flexoff, it was indeed a fine reunion with remnants of days gone past including the sunburn and the showing having not been to bed as well as the football, and also a massive ta very much to the cains for the jubilee.b.q which was epic London times and a chance to display my chuTAFFney and bunting skills.
What better time to return to posting my outspoken and often melined opinions than on the 'day that football died.'
For those of you that didn't know, I'm a Cardiff City fan, a big one, Ive previously held season tickets galore and travelled as far as the league demands in order to watch my beloved bluebirds show their plucky spirit.  If you didn't know this then you probably didn't know that for the last month or so the club has been embroiled in arguments amongst fans and board members over a potential 'rebranding' in order for us to significantly improve relations with potential new supporters and investors in the far east (our owners are a Malaysian corporation and we're now involved in a system of football academies across Asia to improve their grassroots).  Any ways about two weeks ago after 'uproar' from the fans chairman of the club Dato Tien Gee (TG) announced that plans had been scrapped among serious opposition to proposed plans (IE the death threats the board received).
Since that revelation, Ive had a suspicious feeling in my guts we hadn't heard the end of things, TG had said that the investors would continue to supports CCFC but the money wouldn't be so forthcoming without this change.
This morning Cardiff City fans worldwide woke up to this...

That's Aron Gunnarsson (@arongunnarsson1) and Joe Mason modelling our new kits for the season, the home kits being the red and the away kits being the traditional blue and yellow, both kits sporting a new club crest of a red dragon over the old bluebird with the motto passion and fire embroidered underneath.  As well as this came the statement from the clubs board that they had decided on Tuesday to go ahead with the proposed re branding of Cardiff City Football club in order to secure the long term future of the club in foreign markets and success in domestic competition.
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, outrage, shoutyness, loud disgruntlings. you've killed football, your pillaging our club for personal gain, you ruined our heritage how dare you, im sending back my season ticket, arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhh.
Stop (hammer time), I'm a tad confused as to how to feel. I'm a man that has a bluebird tattoo, i chose my car because its blue and i have bluebird memorabilia all over the flat, but its not like we're gonna rock up to the Cardiff City Stadium next season and the team wont be there.
A full re branding causes a team to lose all credibility (read MKDons), but we're not doing that.  We're going to play in red and have a dragon on our badge, we're not moving from Cardiff, we'll still sing our Cardiff city songs and we'll still shout bloooobirds, but next season we'll do it with a potential continent full of new fans!  Why are we doing it, well red is traditionally a lucky colour in the far east and the dragon is a symbol of ferocity and is again lucky.
I appreciate that the argument could be had that if we roll over and accept these changes then the board will keep bending us over and over again, but I honestly believe that TG and the others have the best interests of CCFC at heart and they are truly in this for the long run.
To the doubters I don't know if you mind a mere 7 years ago when not only our new badge was created (yes...you're up in arms about a badge that is not a decade old itself) but a gentleman named Sam Hamman was lord and dictator of Cardiff city football and his regime to take us forward included the appointment of one Mr Peter Ridsdale.  Two gentlemen who can only be described as criminals among football administrators, their adventures included inciting violence with rival fans and creating a false company in order to loan Cardiff city fc £15,000,000 pounds at a payday loan level of interest for Sam and Peter famously told the supporters that every single penny of season ticket money received in 2009 would be spent in the transfer window to insure promotion the premiership, mere months before using it all to pay a tax bill that he'd neglected for a year which almost caused the club to be folded! all of this before presenting the club with a bill for over £1.2 million for his 'services' in mediating a takeover bid!!
It seems to me the same people that are 'up in arms' about this re branding, if we can even call it that, which i don't think we can, its essentially a kit change at best, are the same people that hark back to the glory days of big Sam and pistol peter.  Well to you I say you are not the future of MY football club, you are the past, you are a past that myself and others are ashamed of.  You are the past of Leeds at home and Milwall away, the past of scarves around faces, the prince of wales blockades and smashing the windows of the Philharmonic when you spy an away team jersey at the bar, you are the past of intimidating the wives and children of travelling fans, being banned from stadiums and being bussed from train stations to ground under police guard.  You want to talk about the heritage of our football club, we are the only team to take the FA cup out of England (that doesn't change because we play in red), we played in Europe (in the fucking 60s!) and we've had successful promotion campaigns (we were promoted in 2003 from the old second division, wow!) combine this with successful cup runs (we lost in the fa cup final to far inferior Portsmouth side and again this year to a Liverpool side who were 2 goals down in a penalty shootout!) So I say to you what heritage have we fucking got??? What have we had to cheer about! for 25 years Ive watched the boyos be constant nearly men, the perennial underachievers while all the while you ask any other football fan what they think of Cardiff city they say 'thugs.'
I'm getting behind this change, I'm ready for the barrage of abuse from other clubs fans I'm ready for the inflated ticket prices and I'm ready to order my new red home shirt.  Because in exchange for my loyalty my football will now enjoy proposed plans to expand the CCS to 30,000 seats, a brand new training facility which will bring jobs and revenue to the local area, an end to all historic debt (currently around 14 mil and accumulating an interest of around 100% per annum, cheers again sam and pete) and a guaranteed investment of £100,000,000 into the club, as much as possible of which will be made available as transfer and additional wage budget for Malky.  If this is the kind of evil the Malaysians are up to then LONG LIVE TG!
To the guy who left his scarf outside the club, to the twitter moron who accused us of appeasing 'foreign devils', i don't get why you don't understand that we could not survive the way we were! we certainly couldn't progress! to those guys, I'm glad you're boycotting the games and sending your tickets back, it gives us real fans a better chance of getting tickets, don't you dare come crawling back if this pays off for us you're not welcome your not a true bluebird... we may play in red or blue or bright pink for all i care, I'm from Cardiff city, i am Cardiff city, i don't care if we're called the welsh wankers I'm still in the stand cheering.
The bickering HAS to stop, just get behind the fucking club! just let go of that hooligan image and be as ashamed of it as I am and lets take the club forward and let go of the tried so hard but fell at the last cliche.
I'm 27, in my lifetime my football club has achieved precisely zero, Ive never known the joy of lifting a trophy or waving a flag with 'winners' on it. but to top it all of for the majority of my support time line I've had to concern myself more with whether or not the club is going to exist in 12 months time over results and league positions and if the players running out in red shirts every week changes that I'm all for it, if it means we have a dragon on the badge, I'm all for it, if it means we can just go for it, I'm all for it.
COME ON YOU DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
